Since the inception in October 1990, the Academy of Taiwan Strings (a.k.a. ATS) as shown greatest determination in becoming a world-class strings orchestra. It is honored to receive long-term financial support from Taiwan Secom since 1994. Under the leadership of Mr. Sy-Joun Cheng, who is Director and Art Superintendent. The ATS has undergone several major restructuring in recent years, attracting many outstanding musicians while expanding its administrative resources.
With the goal to promote string music, the ATS frequently gives concerts and makes concert tours throughout the country. Held in the National Concert Hall, on campuses, or in rural areas.
The summer of 1997 saw the happening of the 1st Taiwan Music Festival, organized by the ATS. It allowed local music students to approach and learn from world-renowned soloists and professors face to face. Owing to the tremendous success of this event, the ATS received recognition and supportfrom many organizations and institutions, including the Council of Cultural Affairs of the Executive Yuan, R.O.C.
What distinguishes the ATS even more is its diverse repertoire. While indulging itself in baroque and romantic music, the academy also enjoys the pleasure of interpreting contemporary works. In efforts to present the best string music to the audience and to reach an ever-higher industry standard. The ATS regularly invites master musicians as guest performers,including Augustin Dumay, Victor Pikayzen, ToruYasunaga, Yossif Ivanov, GrzegorzKotów, IngolfTurban, Ning Feng, Christophe Boulier, etc.
Music education has always been the focus of our efforts. Since 2000, the ATS has been holding violin competition biennially. The ATS has beengranted the subsidy for performing arts groups by Council for Cultural Affairsevery year since 2001, and was invited by Across Fukuoka, Japan, and performed in Across Fukuoka Symphony Hall on 30thJanuary, 2000. Then in 2004, the Academy was invited by CCA and performed in Paris, Genevè in Swiss, Castle Wachenheim in Germany and Brussel. In 2013, the Academy was invited by OstfriesischeLandschaft and performed inGermany's Gezeitenkonzert music festival. Moreover, the Academy was invited by the organizer of France and Germany music festival in 2015. Aside from performed for Wissembourg（France）and Ammerseerenade（Germany）music festival. The Academy of Taiwan Strings also had hold a concert in Munich especially for Taiwanese living in Germany.
The ATS strives to enrich the world with beautiful music and to excel in music performing. It is our greatest hope that in the future, when you think of “wonderful music,” you will be thinking of the Academy of Taiwan Strings.
